The Top Choices in 2018
New Year’s Resolutions are those promises we make to change something about ourselves. Since January 1st is the start of a New Year and considered the beginning of a new chapter in our lives, the date is often the unofficial starting point for those resolutions. However, not everyone makes these kinds of promises. But for those who do, here is a look at the top ones for 2018.
1 – Weight Loss/Become A Better Person
According to the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, this year’s top spot is a tie. In fact, losing weight or becoming a better person are two resolutions that have jockeyed for the top spot for more than one year. In 2017 weight loss held the Number 2 position behind the desire to be a better person. In fact, our research shows that personal health tends to fill the top few spots on any New Year’s Resolution list.
2 – Exercising More/Eating Healthier/Finding A Better Job
The same data source cites the next three common resolutions as all tied for second place in 2018. The previous year exercising more was tied at second with weight loss. Eating healthier meals and seeking better employment were still top choices in 2017 but further down the list from 2018.
3 – Improving Overall Health
Do you sense a pattern developing here? In 2018 the goal of improving overall health took third place. Although it may not sound as specific as the other resolutions on the list, it does hint at a desire to do something that may result in a more substantial impact.
4 – Stop Smoking/Spend Less Money
The fourth position in the list of top New Year’s Resolutions for 2018 saw another tie. The pairing of wanting to stop smoking and reducing the amount of money being spent make sense as they almost go hand-in-hand.
Health Versus Personal Growth
The Marist survey, conducted late in 2017, shows that those in the United States who responded are committed to making some kind of change in their lives. The shift of health-related resolutions may signal the start of a new trend. Resolutions related to personal growth such as Reading More Books, Learning A New Skill and Make New Friends slipped to the bottom half of the list for this year.
