Little League Baseball®, the world’s largest youth sports organization, is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary this year. And this month, a total of sixteen teams are convening on Williamsport, Penn., for the annual Little League Baseball® World Series.
We perused the web to curate some of the best, most inspiring tales from the world of youth baseball:
Girl Power! Speaking of Taney Little League, 13-year-old pitcher Mo’Ne Davis threw that 8-0 shutout. Thanks to her ace pitching – she throws a fastball that hits 70 mph – the Taney Dragons of Center City Philadelphia are becoming the very first urban Philly team to advance to the Little League World Series. Mo’Ne is the first American girl to play at the championships in a decade. Check out her fastball!
Another first: Emma March of South Vancouver Little League in British Columbia, Canada, will also be playing – making it only the second time that two girls are playing in the same Little League World Series!
A heated rivalry is no match for Ice Cream: Just three days before Taney Little League from Philly and Newark National from Delaware went head-to-head for a coveted spot at the Little League World Series, the two competitors put their differences aside to make ice cream sundaes. By the time Taney won 8-0, the Newark team cheered on and congratulated their former rivals.
A Day to Cheer: A Chicago team is making its Little League Baseball® World Series debut as the first all-African American team to make to the finals in 31 years. After winning the Great Lakes Regionals, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn even declared Saturday August 16 to be “Jackie Robinson West Little League Champions Day” throughout the state, and sporting goods stores are selling out of commemorative t-shirts almost as fast as they can stock them!
First Trip for Nevada Team: Believe it or not, a team from Nevada has never made the trip to the LL World Series – until now. Mountain Ridge is first Nevada team to win the West Region Championship and make it to the World Series to compete.
